Ro (Michelle Forbes), the hot-tempered Bajoran ensign torn between duty to Starfleet and her war-ravaged people, returns for a final guest shot in the second-to-last episode of the series. Newly promoted and assigned to an undercover mission, she works with Captain Picard to infiltrate the Maquis, an interstellar guerrilla force whose fight for sovereignty in Cardassian territory threatens a precarious peace. A working history of the complex political backdrop of the Trek universe is almost essential to understand the repercussions of this episode. The Maquis are woven through Deep Space Nine and play an integral part in Voyager, and the centuries-old strife between the imperialist Cardassians and the newly liberated Bajorans carries a racial hatred with echoes of some contemporary earthbound conflicts. It makes for complex character drama with startling developments (give credit to the writers for daring to complicate the Trek mythology in the final days of the series), though the episode has to rush through the details of the plot-heavy script. The overly busy story is more than compensated for with an at-times simmering turn by Patrick Stewart as Picard and an understated struggle for Ro's torn allegiances played out in the cracks of Forbes's masklike resolve. --Sean Axmaker
